The Abilities Ranch Way is more than a set of program guidelines. It is the culture that guides how we work with participants, families, volunteers, horses, and one another.
Therapeutic Riding & Equine Experiences and Special Olympics Equestrian
At Abilities Ranch, the goal isn’t simply to teach someone how to ride a horse.
Every participant begins in a different place, so we start by discovering what they can already do and then look for the next appropriate challenge.
That might include approaching and interacting with a horse, grooming, learning horse care, identifying tack and equipment, following directions, mounting and dismounting, developing balance and coordination, learning to stop and steer, communicating with volunteers and the horse, or progressing toward greater independence.
We intentionally look for opportunities that challenge each participant while providing the support they need to succeed.
Sometimes progress means riding independently. Sometimes it means touching a horse for the first time, following a new instruction, communicating a choice, overcoming fear, or simply being willing to try again.
We don’t compare one participant’s progress to another’s.
The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is growth.
Special Olympics Equestrian
Our participants don’t have to “graduate” from Abilities Ranch to become Special Olympics athletes. Competition simply becomes another opportunity for them to continue growing.
Rider. Teammate. Competitor. Athlete.
Who We Serve
Abilities Ranch works with children and adults with a variety of developmental, intellectual, neurological, and physical challenges.
We don’t want to define who someone is — or what they may be capable of — simply by a diagnosis.
Every person is different, so participation is considered individually. We want to learn about the person, understand their needs, and determine whether our current programs can provide a safe, meaningful, and positive experience.
